Our earlier activism \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 stopped legislators from co-sponsoring this \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/112-h3261\/show\">SOPA (the Stop Online Piracy Act)<\/a> might pass the House Judiciary Committee this Thursday. Piracy of intellectual property is, if a problem at all, a negligible problem (and in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2817,2397173,00.asp\">some studies show<\/a> piracy \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 increases consumer entertainment purchases). \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 problem is \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 this legislation can be used by \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 US to <strong>censor<\/strong> \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 Internet (more than <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2010\/12\/20\/dhs-relied-on-bizarr.html\">DHS\/ICE is already doing using flimsy reasoning<\/a>). \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 under SOPA, websites (such as mine) that merely link to controversial content can be held liable for that content. (And what if I link to a site that later becomes controversial without my knowledge!) \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20111212\/16232517056\/wikipedia-considers-blackout-to-protest-sopa.shtml\">Wikipedia is considering temporarily blacking out their site in order to raise awareness of SOPA&#8217;s danger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So call your US House Representative&#8217;s local and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/representatives\/\">DC offices<\/a> against SOPA before Thursday! \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 politely give them a three-sentence statement: 1) Your name, your occupation (if relevant), and that you&#8217;re a constituent (give your state or ZIP code); 2) Two or so reasons explaining why you want your Representative to oppose SOPA (hurts job creation \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 the reliable technology sector, institutes American Internet censorship not unlike China&#8217;s); 3) Say thanks \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 re-state your point: &#8220;I want Representative So-and-so to OPPOSE the Stop Online Piracy Act.&#8221; The worker who answers will be polite to you, \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 don&#8217;t have to worry about that.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 a bipartisan issue: currently, among others, notable Democrat Barbara Boxer \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 notable Republicans Scott Brown and Eric Cantor receive lots of money from organizations opposing SOPA, and notable Republican John Boehner and notable Democrat Harry Reid receive \u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588\u2588 money from organizations supporting it.
